Until the Week of Giving
George Maderos was born and raised in Chico in 1933. He didn't have a lot of advantages when growing up. His parents divorced, his father passed away when he was 8 years old. He and his 2 brothers ended up in a foster home in Paradise for the next 3 years until their mother could regain custody. But through all of this George managed to develop his natural athletic ability and through sports he was able to build a strong character and good ethical values. He went on to excel in 4 sports at Chico State and be named Athlete of the Century. From Chico State he went on to play 2 years of professional football for the SF 49ers. He came back to Chico State to take a teaching/coaching job because it paid more money than pro football. The Chico community was invaluable to him with their support as he went through school. After his passing in 2017 I established this fund with NVCF in an effort to honor his legacy and help kids, like Chico helped George when he was growing up.
In just a couple years time this scholarship fund has helped about a dozen junior golfers go from relative beginners to tournament players. The game of golf teaches life lessons and helps kids learn integrity, patience and to gain self confidence. The fund is named in memory of my husband, George, in an effort to give back to the kids in our community where he grew up.
