Fund Purpose

It is our mission to provide computer science education and awareness to underserved and underrepresented groups in Chico and surrounding areas through community outreach, educational resources, internships and job opportunities and experiential events.

More Info

There are currently 600,000 open computer science positions in the US. By 2020 there will be 1,000,000 more open positions than computer science students. On top of that, women today only represent 18% of all computer science graduates despite 74% of middle school girls expressing interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM).

Currently, through our Girls Who Code Chico program, we are bridging the gender gap in STEM. We are also working to start filling those empty positions with experienced programmers.

Long-term goals include immersive summer camps and internships for Girls Who Code participants, creating and distributing curriculum for local schools interested in building computer science programs, and mentorship opportunities for local developers. We would also like to host a youth-focused hackathon that will allow students and professional developers to work together to build applications that can help the Chico community. Monies from this fund will go towards a scholarship for the winner.

Funds from this program are used to assist in our goals of reaching underrepresented groups in the community and providing opportunities for students throughout the Chico and surrounding areas to gain experience in computer science and technology.
