Deciphering the quagmire of long-term care

CHICO — Long term care planning was the topic of a morning workshop held Thursday at Chico Masonic Family Center. The event was meant to educate people about long-term care options and how to pay for them. About 50 people attended, most taking diligent notes.Four experts spoke during the two-hour event. 

  • Attorney Neil Harris, a partner in Stewart Humpherys Burchett & Molin, spoke about Medi-Cal for long-term care; how will, trusts, etc. impact eligibility. Harris is one of 50 attorneys certified by the National Elder Law Foundation to practice elder law in California.

  •  Cliff McFelter, representative for Butte County Veterans Services Office, discussed veterans' benefits. McFelter serves as a liaison between clients and the Department of Veterans Affairs, Department of Defense, and national service organizations.Butte County Veterans Service Office is at 196 Memorial Way.   •  Bill Hubbard is an attorney and real estate broker who also assists North Valley Community Foundation. He spoke on how charitable giving can help finance long-term care. He also is a Butte College instructor.North Valley Community Foundation is at 3120 Cohasset Road. Call 891-1150.
  •  Tatiana Fassieux, program manager of Health Insurance Counseling and Advocacy Program at Passages Adult Resource Center, spoke on understanding long-term care insurance. Fassieux testified in 2008 before the U.S. Senate Special Committee on Aging  about problems with 1-800 Medicare call centers.
